At first glance the title had me convinced I would be going back in time. Suddenly, a stereo was playing and I knew where I was. A few more pages and I was holding back tears right along with the heroine for the changes she was facing in a present-day setting and also what she was giving up from her past. Present and past and future all in the first chapter! What a feat! I was hooked and didn't stop reading until the end--a delightful story! With Biblical references, the struggle for true goodness erased any chance for gray areas. The descriptions of colorful Louisiana, bayou culture, plantations and mansions, vivid scenery, historic places, even antiques, transported me right into those mysterious swamplands. Each character was quickly well-developed-- the sweet ones, the sour and bitter ones, the connivers and rascals, and the mysterious ones to wonder about. I just wanted to know what was going to happen to them next. The Tessa versus Simone scenes kept me on edge and holding my breath. Ada and Cede entered and let me exhale or smile. The image of Cede's cousin push-poling in the pirogue is still etched in my mind. And, the French words sprinkled throughout added another coat of paint to the characters and story. I hope there is a sequel to this book bringing more of those bayou people to meet; maybe a prequel with Tessa, her uncle, an earlier Louisiana life---whispering even farther back into the past.Product details

When Tessa Chandelle has to leave behind the family business in antiques because of her Uncle's scheming ways, she is devastated. She plans to go to a new job but an accident before she gets there ends the dream of finding a job. Then mysterious Brain La Moyne steps into the picture with a new job offer and mystery and tragedy from the past invades the story. This is a romantic adventure but a bit more than that and I think readers will like the writer's style in a different kind of romantic suspense.
As mentioned in a few other reviews, I had a hard time connecting with the characters. I found Tessa a bit annoying, especially the way she just took the pettiness and problems caused by two of the other characters. Being a Christian doesn't mean you lack a backbone and let other people control your life. It was very well written, just not for me.
I’d call this a modern day Cinderella story, but the prince wasn’t so charming with his broken heart in the past. I like to read stories that could possibly be real as far as interactions. While I really liked the housekeeper, the prince was gone from her life most of the story, and had issues. They did talk on the phone towards the end though. Aside from the extreme wealth, some parts seemed too far-fetched and his rude hatred toward her parents, when he was supposedly in love, was too much. Also the crazy man who lived isolated with his wife being allowed to keep a gun was too unlikely, and the overseas connections and events was too much. But throughout the book the author honored God.
Tessa Chandelle’s uncle passed fake pieces off as antiques and her family’s antique business fails with creditors are hounding her. When Brian Le Moyne crashes the going-away party looking for a special chair before Chandelle Antiques closes, Tessa can see a flash of sadness in his eyes. The next day, her car breaks down on the way to a job interview in New Orleans, and she realizes she’s close to where Brian lives. Her car is hit while on the phone with him. From then on their lives become intertwined but plagued with doubts and uncertainties. Only God knows where all this confusion will lead.
Overall, I thought this was a well-written book, and I found few mistakes. It would have been better to me if I’d also gotten some of the story from Brian’s point-of-view, but it was told totally from Tessa’s. I didn’t like the fact that Brian came across as so secretive, because he had no reason for being this way, and it made him harder to like. I expected the antagonists to do more to get rid of Tessa than they did. I wish there’d been less descriptions and slow-moments in the plot and more time with Brian and Tessa together, but the author tended to just tell about the fact they were getting to know each other instead of showing it. However, I still found the book to be hard to put down. In the end, I gave 4.5 stars, which rounded up to a 5.
We first meet Tessa as she finishes up the last day in her antique shop that has been in the family for over a 100 years. She and her family are nearly bankrupt but are trying to pay off creditors who are hounding their back. Her reputation as an authority as an antique's expert is in danger due to her uncle mishandling the business due to his gambling habits and other shady dealings. She may have lost her business and damage to her reputation but her faith in God remains steadfast. On her last day she meets Brian, a wealthy business looking for a rare chair. He eventually hires her to restore the family mansion after a fire destroyed may of it's valuable antiques. Brian is bitter against God and Christians after suffering a tragedy in his life.
This story kept me turning the pages. There are a couple of people in this story who do not want Tess to restore the mansion. She had to battle many obstacles in accomplishing her goal in restoring the mansion. She finds herself growing closer to Brian but she has suffered a bad relationship in the past and besides she and Brian do not agree on matters of the Lord.
I enjoyed reading this book. It was a free download. I went on looking for other works by her but this must be her first. This book was just released April 2016 of this year. I hope the author writes more stories that take place in Louisiana. I would not mind re-visiting these characters in a se
